It’s Coachella 2024. A 26-year-old redhead is on stage in a pink butterfly dress.

“My name is Chappell Roan,” she says. “I’m your favorite artist's favorite artist. I’m your dream girl’s dream girl. And I’m going to serve what you are: cunt!”

She’s met with thunderous applause.

Roan, listed in the small print as a part of Coachella’s 2024 lineup when it went public in January 2024, gained about 4.2 million monthly Spotify listeners after the festival, according to Chartmetric.

But before this Coachella boost, Roan was seeing an increase in Spotify listeners, according to a fan’s personal tracking.

Roan, born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, created the Chappell Roan persona in 2017 after uploading a YouTube video of original song “Die Young.” Atlantic Records signed Roan shortly after her online debut and put out the EP, “School Nights,” that same year.

Roan told the Boston Herald that Atlantic dropped her after she released her single “Pink Pony Club.”

But Roan didn’t give up. She kept releasing singles independently until she was signed to Island Records, which released her debut album, “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.”

In the lead up to her album, Roan released  singles throughout 2022. She reached mainstream success after promoting her single “HOT TO GO!” on TikTok

This success carried over to her album release in September 2023, which sold about 7,000 units in the first week, according to ChartData on X

About a month before Coachella, Roan’s album sold about 100,000 units, according to ChartData on X.

Roan’s pre-Coachella success could have something to do with her stint as opening act on Olivia Rodrigo’s world tour, where she performed about 20 times.

Roan’s opening performances have been posted all over TikTok. One video, posted by Dylan Mulvaney, has about 2.3 million views.

Roan’s latest single, “Good Luck, Babe!” was released on April 5. It has gained about 51 million streams since its release, whereas her hit single “HOT TO GO!” has about 52 million streams.

With a second album imminent, Roan is getting bigger and bigger everyday. She’s changing the world of pop and the world can’t wait to see it.
